I am excited to say that I am about to get my supervisor’s diploma. This is something I’ve wanted since the pandemic when I felt the first pangs of longing to be amongst people to share experiences, find support and feel heard. Establishing a supervision practice feels pertinent to me now as so much of our lives have become boringly remote, it is easier and cheaper to connect across digital platforms rather than experience really connecting in person. It seems crucial to me that individuals feel that they are working directly with people to form a sense of collaboration, not at a distance. Surely we can only grow in self-awareness through being directly in relationship with each other.

Since the 20th Century supervision evolved from social work into psychology and education and then became a platform for organisations from across all sectors to ensure their employees had a space to develop professionally, get feedback and enhance a sense of well-being. I can see that if this structure is held in the right way it could become a cornerstone for organizational health and professional growth, facilitating communication in groups through conversations around development and performance that would not have been possible before. It builds trust and promotes accountability across all levels of any profession.

In turn, I hope to gain insight into team dynamics, uncover hidden issues early, help people navigate difficult, ethical challenges and foster a culture of continuous learning. This practice should strengthen people’s engagement and retention levels, and help people feel heard and valued in their roles. It fosters supportive professional relationships as members get to know each other better in a space that is built for aiding communication.

I don’t think there could be a better time for this. The modern workplace is marked by hybrid work models, increasing digitalization, and heightened stress levels. These shifts can easily erode connection and morale if not actively managed. Supervision offers a structured space for reflection and re-alignment — helping teams stay cohesive, resilient, and purpose-driven in the face of change.

In essence, the supervision practice I want to offer is not just about oversight; it’s about empowerment. By investing in a consistent, supportive supervision space now, corporations can nurture a workforce that is adaptive, motivated, and better connected to their work force as well as themselves. Change doesn’t start with action- it starts with reflection.
